Foreign Trade Developments

Agricultural Trade Surplus up 55 percent so far in Fiscal 1980. U.S. agricultural
exports were $8.2 billion greater than agricultural imports during the first four
months of fiscal 1980, resulting in an agricultural trade surplus about 55 percent
ahead of the same point in fiscal 1979. Trade date for October 1979-January
1980 show total export value was $14.3 billion, up 34 percent from the same
period last year. Export values rose for all commodity categories except tobacco.
Leading value gainers were cotton and linters, up 73 percent, and grains and
feeds, up 65 percent from the year-earlier level.

Northeast International Seafood Exposition. The first U.S. fish and shellfish
exhibit devoted exclusively to the export market will be held at the Viking
Hotel in Newport, Rhode Island, May 19-20. The show offers foreign seafood
buyers an opportunity to establish contacts with a large number of firms of
the American fishing industry, which will display the full line of their
seafood products. In addition to the exhibits, seminars will be held on Joint
Ventures with Foreign Firms, New Techniques in Seafood Processing and Packing,
Underutilization Species, and The Future of the U.S. Fishing Industry and its
Export Potential. Firms interested in participating should contact the Eastern
United States Agricultural and Food Export Council without delay. Phone: (212)
432-0020. Telex: 420859 EUSAFEC.

Japanese Buying Mission. U.S. exporters will have an opportunity to meet and talk
business with over 100 top Japanese buyers this September. Highlight of the visit
will be product displays at four locations, Philadelphia- September 15, Houston
September 17, Kansas City-September 19, and Seattle-September 22. A full line of
food and other agricultural products are eligible for display, demonstration, and
promotion, including fresh, frozen, canned, dried, and dehydrated fruits and
vegetables, rice, poultry, red meats, fish, dairy products, snack items, feedstuffs,
grains and cotton. A similar Japanese buying mission last year resulted in about
$4 million of additional business for the U.S. trade. Exporters can arrange to
meet and display their products to the Japanese buyers through the following four
regional groups that work with the Foreign Agricultural Service on export promotion:
