Increased Livestock Exports to Italy Anticipated. According to our Agri-
cultural Counselor in Rome, the Italian Livestock Industry is having a good
year as a result of profitable prices for milk, beef and pork, more protection
for domestic producers resulting from lower import, export and value added
taxes, and expanding demand for livestock products even at the higher prices.
In addition, in 1979, the livestock producers will have access to $320 million
from the government of Italy for livestock production under a law designed to
aid livestock development and $500 million from the EC Commission for a five-
year modernization and development program of cattle raising facilities in
Southern Italy under a program labeled the "Meat Plan". These favorable
conditions could provide increased opportunities for U.S. exporters of live
animals to Italy, particularly for dairy and swine and bovine semen.
