Foreign Market Development

TORS/Export Briefs Accomplishments 1980. Attache followups from July 1,
1980 thru June 30, 1981 documented 85 sales totaling $48,247,712 that had
resulted from trade leads they had submitted for the TORS/Export Briefs
program in calendar year 1980. This was based on 1,050 attache followups
or 28.5 percent of the 3,675 trade leads submitted from all sources during
the year. A projection of this sales figure would indicate that total
sales may have been as much as $170 million.

Agricultural Counselors, Attaches and ATO's did followups for 44 percent of
the 2415 trade leads they had submitted during the year. Commerical
officers at posts not covered by FAS submitted 1,006 trade leads and 254

number of trade leads was 1,200 above the 2,475 trade leads submitted in
1979.

Minneapolis/St. Paul Agri-Business Exposition. Foreign buyers will be at
the Minneapolis Auditorium & Convention Hall, September 10-12, 1982 for the
initial United States Agri-Business Exposition. The exposition will
showcase the total spectrum of the industry from agricultural machinery,
livestock supplies and equipment, seeds, fertilizers and plant materials td
processed foods. A conference featuring the latest in agri-business
technology will be held in connection with the exposition. Inquiries about

Venezuela frees import of many fresh vegetables and black beans. The
Government of Venezuela has announced the free importation of black beans,
olives and garlic, requiring only a phytosanitary certificate from the
exporting country and Venezuela. A number of products previously reserved
for importation by the Government will be passed to the private sectors
through a licensing system. The products include onions, tomatoes,
peppers, carrots, and a variety of tropical root crops such as yuca, name,
apio and ocumo.

Notice of Foreign Proposals Concerning Standards in Agriculture. As
required of all signatories to the GATT Standards Code, this notification
of foreign proposed standards-related rules has been provided for the 1
information and comment of interested agencies and firms. The Technical
Office invites inquiries from anyone who believes that any of the proposed
regulations notified under this heading could cause a trade problem.

Netherlands. The Netherlands Ministry of Public Fealth and Environmental
Protection has proposed (1) the Cigarettes and Cigarette tobacco (trade
descriptions) Decree (commodities act), and (2) the Decree Implementing
Article 1(2) of the Cigarettes and Cigarette Tobacco Decree. The
Cigarettes and Cigarette Tobacco Decree lays down that the tar and~nicotine
contect must be stated on the packaging of cigarettes and cigarette
tobacco. The Decree Implementing Article 1(2) relates to the method of i
establishing the tar and nicotine content of cigarettes.
