Foreign Market Developments


Import Duties Thailand. Tax package announced October 15 by Thailand's Ministry of
Finance included a simultaneous across the board 10% increase in import duties as
well as the establishment of a 60% maximum ceiling on such duties. The new rates
took effect immediately but are to last only one year. Food products benefiting from
the 60%i ceiling are a number of items now being assessed an ad valorem duty of 80%.
These include meat and meet preparations; products containing cocoa; puffed cereals;
biscuits, bread and similar products not containing honey, sugar, fats, eggs, cheese
or fruit; and vegetable and fruit preparations. Products specifically exempted from

the 109o increase include skimmed milk powder, butter fat and vegetable oil. Wheat
flour was one food itea identified for additional (as yet unspecified) protection.

Middle East Supermarket Promotions. U.S. foods are to be featured at tw supermarket
chains in the Mliddle East in early 1983. Jointly sponsored by the USDA's Foreign
Agricultural Service, these promotion events will be carried out in four Safeway
Supermarkets in Saudi Arabia from January' 30 February~ 12, 198;, and twro K. M.
Brothers food stores in the United Arab Emirates from January 23 February 6, 1983.
