The image is a publicity photograph from a Spanish patriotic "album" during the Ten Years' War in Cuba (1868-1878). The author's text recounts the first two years of the insurrection and highlights the achievements of the Spanish army, as well as Cuban volunteers and other supporters of Spanish rule during the conflict. The plates depict public spaces in Cuba, major military leaders, and images of some of the Cuban volunteers. The current image is particularly noteworthy because of its inclusion of a Cuban of color among the "Defenders of National Integrity," as the image is titled. The individuals in the photograph are not named; two different copies of the 1872 edition (one at the Library of Congress and one at the Biblioteca National in Madrid) contain different plates featuring some of the same individuals, but in different arrangements. It is not clear whether these were actual soldiers or not.
