Kunes, a 42-year-old veteran of
the pro circuit, took sick Satur-
day night after a party on the
Nieuw Amsterdam. He couldn't be
sure it was what he ate that did-
n't agree with him or whether it
was just his stomach (he has had
six major operations), but he had
little sleep during the night, was
sick in I e locker rr I
fore starting out in the morning.
sick again uetwe ,-
then again back in the locker af-
ter the match was over.
He operated on pills and milk
practically all day but despite it
all was a tough foe for Johnny to
conquer. It takes nothing from
Johnny's grand victory to wax
poetic on Kunes' courageous bat-
te but you just have to doff the
golfing cap to the guy for the
professional fight he waged.
Johnny licked him, o.k.. but when
Kunes went down he was still
swinging.
There was one stage In the
morning round yesterday where
Kunes forged to the front but he
hooked a drive off No. 15 into an
impossible lie against a hill, took
a six to Johnny's birdie and the
lead went bloole. And even after
the rest session, which for him
was spent in the locker room, he
got back to even terms on No. 11
only to hook into !. tree on No. 12,
wind up with another six while
Mac came through with still an-
other bird...and that was just
about it as far as the champion-
ship was concerned.
Going into 18 Johnny was two
strokes up and both were on the
green. Johnny putted.and needed
another three-footer for a par.
Kunes had a ten-footer for a bir-
die. A par gave him the $1,030
first pro prize but he wasn't set-
tling. He went for the bird, hit too
hard and rolled two feet past the
cup. and when his coming back
putt bounced in and out of the
hole the gallery groaned-be-
cause by that time everybody was
fohim to lead the pros.
probably is typical of the guy
that he refused to bow out witn a
"safe" par when the $1.000 check
was there for the taking. lie went
for it all, undoubtedly figuring
that a birdie would have made
John press on his three-foot putt
and conceivably could have
wound up with a tie.
But Genial Gene missed his
$250 gamble, shrugged it off.
warmly congratulated John on
his triumph and later was all
smiles when he shook hands with
Posse as they split the loot.
Kunes' overall game was great
throughout the tournament with
one exception: he hooked a few
woods at just the wrong time.
MacMurray's game, of course.
was like a calm sea on a clear
day: It was beautiful to see. Only
on the last 18 did he show any
unsteadiness...and then it was-
n't for long.
Posse finished fastest of all, but
the race wasn't long enough. In
the stretch drive he came up with
a stealing 68 round, including no
less than seven birdies, but his
earlier straying wouldn't be over-
come.
Space does not permit today
but there are many more things
to-be said about the tournament.
The National Brewery, for one.
will have to get a bouquet for
sponsoring the show but for the
time being please hang on.

WASHINGTON, (NMA). The cUl of en.

foreign policy seems to be hat the Oe states-

Senator Taft is fn k honest enou to
admit that he esiaMV whether te Rus-
