From Johnny Law who captained Notre-Dame in '29: "I'll be
listening to the broadcast of the Coach of the Year dinner out
of Dallas Thursday night. I claim a slight athletic kinship to your
winner, Charlie Ca'dwell. Like the Princeton coach I too was first
exposed to football at Yonkers High. I have to laugh when I think
of the conditions we played under in those days as contrasted
with the luxuries present-day high school athletes enjoy. We had
to dress at home, walk or take the trolley to Van Cortland Park
for practice, same long trip back home, and if the water happen-
ed to be hot we got a bath. (Sometimes we were lucky and it was
cold.' I draw no moral. I would have much preferred to have the

Rescuers Rescued

In Panama Bay

After Motor Failure

Two rescuers were rescued yes-
8-17 pilots Capts. Victor L.
Wojtkowski and Jack W. Riesden,
-who have made dozens of rescue
flights for the First Rescue
Squadron learned that about the
"sweetest thing I ever heard waus
that helicopter coming in."
On a day off the two fiers de-
ieded to go fishing in Panama
Bay. Fishing was good and so
was the weather but about noon
their outboard motor boat de-
veloped engine trouble. The boat
began to take on water. The Iwo
pilots managed to salvage -he
motor and their fish and
scrambled onto a cactus-covered
rocky Island between Taboga 'aij
Kobbe beach. There they sat. and
there they expected to spend the
n: -ht.
But late yesterday afternoon
when the two men were fIvlE
hours Overdue, their families I-e-
came alarmed. Logical rescuers
were the men of Flight B of .he
First Rescue Squadron. and ine
of the most logical was Capt. HalF
J. Basham who had frequently
fished with the pilots.

He took off from Albrook in a
hl.copter, carrying as flight en-
gineer gt.. Philip E. Moore. The
helicopter was escorted by an
L-1S lqhtplane, flown by Capt.
John Miler.
