JOE WILLIAMS

S Being a pro and charged with apelfie ivijelr 41 arlibilftil
Perhaps it is sufficient to say DistriCt AttOrney U ift and hi
ea did no more than was routine In espIing the I llk egle s.
ketball filth. Nevertheless theirs was and continues to be an
outstandingg job.
S I regret as much can not be said for the colleges them-
* selves, their athletic directors and Ned Irish, who took the games
i on the campus and sold them in commercial arenas as big time
howss. That they lacked the facilitlee and s0eialased fil is
-seadily admitted. But whether they dli as much WIth whit they
had is debatable. Nor can it be said that their matitte and ob-
jectives have always gleamed with nobility of purpose.
It is understandable that Irish. who got fat on a sound pro-
motional idea, should stubbornly resist any MOlV that might tend
tu diminish his position or profits. Lesq understandable is his
disputatious attitude toward the D.A.'s office, his quick sensitiv-
ity to forthright criticism and the minimum contributions he's
made to reform.
His answer to Hogan's observation that Madison Square Gar-
den is an "unwholesome atmosphere" for college competition was,
in effect, that the prosecutor didn't know what he was talking
about. When an uncooperative athletic director charged Irish with
dictatorial practices aj the basketball writers' luncheon the other
day the promoter, Inflamed, turned to the directors present and
called on them to refute the assertion. Irish seemed both surpris-
ed and displeased when these normally more cooperative gentle-
men failed to do so.
i S S

THE COLLEGES SOLD OUT
j Under Irish college basketball around here has become some-
thing of a monopoly. It is run much like Mike Jacobs. the old
ticket scalper, used to control the prize fight racket-a procedure
which proved so lucrative, incidentally, the Garden stockholders
adopted it and carried on from there.
If a fight manager didn't play ball with Jacobs he didn't get
an business. In lin the h same policy an uncooperative ath-
letic director could expect few breaks from Irish, who, by way of
tightening his control even set up territorial rights which the
colleps were forced to respect or suffer banishment from the
Garden.
Incredible. lsn't It? But it's a fact just the same. Under Irish
law I couldn't expect to play In the Garden If I played elsewhere
within a 100-mild radius. There was generous exception. I could
play on my home court with immunity. And putting one little
astonishment after another whatever became of the anti-trust
law?
Still you can't blame Irish altogether. He's In business to
make money out of college basketball. Because the game is the
medium through which he prospers he's naturally concerned over
Its future. And you want to keep in -mind the sell-out of the
colleges to the promoter was not done at gun point. They liked
everything about the set up, or else they wouldn't have left the
campus in the first place.
This Is another reason why the colleges should return the
game to the campus. Once again the athletic director would be
ln full charge. Schedules would not have to be made to conform
to the promoter's commercial design. The game Would regain
some of Its lost prestige and public respect. So Would the athletic
directors, although It might taller considerable time for these
lentlemaen to get used to it again.
0 .
ATHLETIC DIRECTORS WEAK
I got a little sick the other day as I listened to metropolitan
athletic directors, one after another, get up and describe the ad-
vantages the commercial arena offers college basketball, knowing
how much of their independence they had surrendered and feel-
Ifn certain a major conlsderatlon with them was the fiscal solv-
ency of their books.
S.'As I reported earlier one athletic director, Dr. Sam Wino-
d. O City College, did have a complaint to register: He wasn't
tting enough good tickets or enough of the gate. I'm now asked
believe by a mutual friend that the good doctor was merely
ylng to be funny. At that very moment thre&City College play-
were facing jail for accepting dirty money to throw games.
e All I can say is that Dr. Winograd picked out a hell of a time
" compete with Berle. This, however, was rather illustrative of
le general mood. It would not be fair to say the athletic direc-
er were indifferent but they seemed remarkably complacent In
the circumstances. They surely did not give me the impression
that as long a sports are in their hands sports would have no-
thing to fear.

There ae definite reasons why Scotch whisky can only
come from Scotland; and why none Is bin thin WhiWe

distillation hardly changed through centuries; if men who
