April 1959 a 15ly C199

Chick Production --- -:- ,.-

Commercial hatcheries produced 311, 561, 000 chicks during April--up 4
percent from April 1958 and up 9 percent from the 1953-57 average for the
month. The number of broiler-type chicks hatched was up 1i percent. The
number of egg-type chicks produced was down 2 percent.

The number of broiler-type chicks produced during April totaled
178, 695, 000, compared with 162, 990, C '., in April 195 Production for the
first four months of 1959 totaled 661, 037, COO--up 12 percent from the
production during these same months in 1958. Egg-type chicks hatched during
April totaled 132, 866, 000. Production January through April totaled
348, 393, 000--about 1 percent more than the number produced during these
months last year.

The demand for both broiler and egg-type chicks, in response to the
relatively low prices for eggs and broilers, has slackened considerably from
previous months and is below that of a year ago. Smaller May hatches than
a year ago are in prospect. The number of broiler-type eggs in incubators on
May 1 was 1 percent less than on May 1, 1958. The number of :;s for egg-
type chicks in incubators on May 1, 1959 was 13 percent less than on May 1
last year.
Poult Production

Poult production during April reflected a continuation of the trend of
previous months. The production of heavy white breeds and light breeds was
larger than a year earlier, while production of other heavy breeds (mostly
bronze) was smaller. Heavy white breed poult production of 2, 773, 000 was
25 percent larger than in April 1958. Other heavy breeds production of
S13, 073, 000 poults was down 3 percent. Total heavy breed production was up
1 percent. The number of heavy breed poults hatched during the first 4 months
of 1959 was about the same as a year earlier. The hatch of heavy white breed
poults was up 32 percent, while other heavy breed poults was down 6 percent.
The number of light breed poults hatched in April totaled 1, 898, 303, compared
with 1, 552, 000 in April 1958--an increase of 22 percent. Production during the
months January through April totaled 6, 456, 000 up 43 percent from the same
period in 1958.

Turkey eggs in incubators on May 1 indicate that the number of heavy white
and light breed poults hatched in May will be larger than in May last year. The
hatch of other heavy breed poults, mostly broad breasted bronze, will be
smaller.
