HATCHERY PRODUCTION
August 1961

-- September 15, 1961

U.S DEPOSITORY

Chick Production

Chick output by hatcheries during August totaled 191, 004, 000,
compared with 171, 874, 000 in August 1960. Production of broiler-
type chicks at 170,432, 000 was up 10 percent from August 1960 and
at a record high level for the month. Production of broiler-type
chicks January through August totaled 1, 533, 015, 000, compared with
1, 380, 033, 000 during this period in 1960--up 11 percent. Eggs in
incubators on September 1 indicate that the hatch of broiler-type
chicks in September 1961 will be above the hatch in September last
year.

Egg-type chicks hatched in August totaled 20, 572, 000--26 per-
cent above the hatch in August 1960. During the first 8 months of 1961,
the hatch of egg-type chicks totaled 435, 853, 000--up 7 percent from
these months in 1960. Eggs in incubators on September 1 indicate a
larger egg-type hatch during September 1961 than last year.

Poult Production

Heavy white breed poult production during August of 1, 672, 000
was 27 percent larger than in August 1960. The hatch of other heavy
breeds (mostly bronze) of 273, 000 was 33 percent less than the hatch
in August last year. Output of light breeds in August totaled 1, 017, 000--
down 10 percent from August 1960. Since the first of the year, the
output of turkey poults totaled 104, 292, 000--up 23 percent from the
comparable output in 1960. The cumulative output (January through
August) of heavy white breeds was 29, 044, 000--up 48 percent; other
heavy breeds, 64, 283, 000--up 16 percent. Turkey eggs in incubators
on September 1 indicate that the hatch of heavy breed poults in Sep-
tember will be slightly larger than in September 1960. The hatch of
light breed poults is expected to be considerably s'maller-than in
September 1960.
