ChlUcS Production

Chick output by hatcheries during June was estimated at
229, 896, 000, compared with 228, 956, 000 in June 1960. Production
of broiler-type chicks at 196, 504, 000 was up 6 percent from June
1960 and at a record high level for the month. Eggs in incubators on
July 1 indicate the hatch in July will also be above that of last year.
Production of broiler-type chicks January through June totaled
1, 175, 198, 000 compared with 1, 048, 838, 000 during this period in
1960--up 12 percent.

Egg-type chicks hatched in June totaled 33, 392, 000, down 23
percent from June 1960. During the first six months of 1961, the
hatch of egg-type chicks totaled 393, 544, 000, up 5 percent from
these months in 1960 but 14 percent below the production of this
period in 1959. Eggs in incubators July 1 indicate a smaller egg-
type hatch during July than last year.

Poult Production

The hatch of heavy breed poults during June totaled 13, 746, 000.
This was 20 percent above the hatch in June 1960. The hatch of heavy
white breeds was up 39 percent--the hatch of other heavy breeds
(mostly broad breasted bronze) was up 12 percent. The hatch of light
breed poults during June totaled 1, 889, 000, up 11 percent. Since
the first of the year turkey hatcheries have produced 93, 776, 000
poults, up 25 percent from the comparable output in 1960. The
cumulative output of heavy white breeds was 24, 381, 000, up 52 percent;
other heavy breeds, 61, 217, 000, up 17 percent; light breeds,
8, 178,000, up 19 percent.

Turkeys eggs in incubators on July 1 indicate that the hatch
of poults (all breeds) in July will be larger than in July 1960.
