HATCHERY PRODUCTION .
August 1962

Chick Production

Chick output by hatcheries during August totaled 191, 228, 000 chicks,
according to the Crop Reporting Board. Production of broiler chicks at
170,112, 000 was practically unchanged from production in August 1961. The
hatch of broiler chicks in September is expected to be above a year earlier.
The number of eggs in incubators on September 1 was 6 percent above the
number on September 1, 1961. Production of broiler chicks January through
August totaled 1, 499, 223, 000, compared with 1, 537, 948, 000 during this same
period in 1961, a decrease of 3 percent. Egg-type chicks hatched in August
totaled 21,116, 000--up 3 percent from August 1961. The total for the first 8
months of 1962 at 410, 630, 000 was down 6 percent from the corresponding
period in 1961. Eggs in incubators on September 1 indicate a smaller egg-type
hatch in September 1962 than in September last year.

Poult Production

The production of heavy breed poults during August totaled 1, 886, 000--
down 7 percent from the production in August 1961. Output of heavy white
breeds at 1, 543, 000 was down 10 percent. Output of other heavy breeds
(monthly broad breasted bronze) at 343, 000 was up 10 percent from August
1961. Production of light breed poults totaled 1, 053, 000--up 6 percent from
August 1961.
Since the first of the year, the output of turkey poults totaled 91, 480, 000--
down 15 percent from the comparable output in 1961. The cumulative hatch of
heavy white breeds was 28, 500, 000, down 6 percent; other heavy breeds
54, 905, 000, down 18 percent; and light breeds 8, 075, 000, down 28 percent.
Turkey eggs in incubators on September 1 indicate a smaller hatch of heavy
breed poults in September than in September last year. The hatch of light
breeds will be larger than in September last year.
