HATCH iY PRODUCTION
March 1959 pri 1, 195?
Chick Production -

Commercial hatcheries produced 302, 415, 000 chicks dti rg aQ iK 1 95--
14 percent more than in March 1950 and 10 percent more than the 1953-57
average for the month. Chicks produced for boriler poruction were up 20
percentfrom March last year. Egg-type chicks produced were up 6 percent.

The number of broiler chicks produced during March totaled 182, 240, 000,
compared with 151, 253, 000 in March 1958. Production for the first three
months of 1959 totaled 482, 342, 000--up 13 percent from the production during
these same months in 1958. Egg-type chicks hatched during March totaled
120, 175, 000--up 6 percent from March 1958. Production during January
through March totaled 215, 527, 000--3 percent more than the number produced
during these months last year.

S The demand for broiler chicks continues above that of a year ago and a
larger April hatch than a year ago is in prospect. The number of broiler-type
eggs in incubators on April 1 was 12 percent more than on April 1, 1958.
The number of eggs for egg-type chicks in incubators on April 1 was about the
same as on April 1, 1958 indicating little change from the egg-type hatch
in April last year.

Poult Production

Heavy white breed poult production during March was 42 percent larger than
in March 1958. Other heavy breed poult production (mostly broadbreasted
bronze) was dowh 5 percent. Total heavy breed production was up 1 percent
from March 1958. The number of heavy breed poults hatched during the first
three months of 1959 was about the same as a year earlier. The hatch of
Heavy white breed poults was up 38 percent, while other heavy breed poults
were down 8 percent.

The number of light breed poults hatched in March totaled 1, 727, 000
compared with 1, 131, 000 in March 1958--an increase of 53 percent. For the
period January through March, the number of light breed poults hatched was
also 53 percent more than the number hatched during these months in 1958.

Turkey eggs in incubators on April 1 indicate that the number of heavy
white and light breed poults hatched in April will be larger than in April
last year. The hatch of other heavy breed poults, mostly boradbreasted
bronze, will be smaller.
