DECEMBER 1962

SU.S DEPOSMlTORanuary 16, 1963

Chick Production

Chick production by hatcheries during December 1962 totaled 189,119, 000 chicks--
up 7 percent from December 1961, according to the Crop Reporting Board. Produc-
tion of broiler chicks at 168, 513, 000 was up 8 percent from December 1961. The
cumulative hatch of broiler chicks during 1962 totaled 2, 161, 361, 000--2 percent more
than the 2, 118, 504, 000 produced in 1961. Eggs in incubators on January 1, 1963
indicate that the hatch of broiler chicks in January will be about the same as in
January 1962.

Egg-type chicks hatched in December 1962 totaled 20, 606, 000--up 2 percent from
December 1961. The cumulative hatch for the year 1962 totaled 497, 905, 000--down 5
percent from the 525, 010, 000 produced in 1961. Eggs in incubators January 1, 1963
indicate that the January 1963 hatch of egg-type chicks will be larger than the hatch
in January last year.

Poult Production

Production of heavy breed poults during December 1962 totaled 1, 445, 000--down
40 percent from December 1961. Output of heavy white breeds at 1, 032, 000 was 44 per-
cent less than in December 1961. Other heavy breed poults hatched (mostly broad-
breasted bronze) totaled 413, 000, down 29 percent from December 1961. Production
of light breed poults totaled 500, 000--up 57 percent from December 1961.

During the year 1962, the output of turkey poults totaled 97, 671, 000--down 16
percent from the output in 1961. The cumulative hatch of heavy white breeds was
32,160, 000--down 10 percent; other heavy breeds 55, 738, 000--down 18 percent; and
light breeds 9, 773, 000--down 22 percent. Turkey eggs in incubators on January 1,
1963 indicate a smaller hatch of heavy breed poults than in January 1962. The hatch
of light breed poults will be larger than the hatch in January last year.
