compared with 192,444,000 in December 1962, according to the Crop Reporting Board.
Broiler chicks totaled 185, 986,000--up 8 percent from December last year and the
largest output of record for December. During 1963, there were 2,248,903,000 broiler
chicks hatched--2 percent more than in 1962, and the largest output during any year of
record. Broiler-type eggs in incubators on January 1 were up 8 percent from January 1
last year indicating that the broiler hatch will be larger in January 1964 than in
January 1963.
here were 23,213,000 egg-type chicks hatched in December 1963--10 percent more
than a year earlier. Increases were 36 percent in the East North Central States, 26

the West North Central, 6 percent in the Mid-Atlantic, and 1 percent in the Pacific
Coast States. Decreases were 18 percent in the Mountain States and 17 percent in
the New England States. Production in the East South Central States in December 1963
was about the same as in December 1962. The hatch of egg-type chicks during 1963
totaled 510,925,000--2 percent more than in 1962. The number of egg-type eggs in
incubators on January 1, 1964 was up 8 percent from January 1 last year indicating
a larger egg-type hatch in January 1964 than in January 1963.

Poults Hatched
Heavy breed poults hatched in December totaled 1,883,000--up 30 percent from
December 1962 but 22 percent less than the hatch in December 1961. The hatch of
heavy white breeds totaled 1,319,000--an increase of 26 percent. Tae hatch of other
heavy breeds (mostly broad breasted bronze) totaled 564,000--up 39 percent from
December 1962. Production of light breed poults totaled 583,000--up 18 percent from
December 1962. The number of turkey poults hatched during 1963 was 101,273,000--
an increase of 2 percent over 1962. The hatch of heavy white breeds during the year
was 34,223,000--an increase of 4 percent from 1962; other heavy breeds were 56,583,000,
fractionally higher; and light breed hatch at 10,467,000 was up 7 percent. The number
of heavy breed eggs in incubators on January 1, 1964 was up 23 percent from January 1,
1963 indicating a larger heavy type hatch in January than a year ago. The number of
light breed eggs in incubators on January 1 also indicates a larger hatch of light
breed poults in January 1964 than in January 1963, as the number of eggs in incubators
on January 1, was 3 percent larger than on January 1 last year.
