CHICK PRODUCTION

The August broiler-type hatch totaled 247 million chicks, according to the Crop
Reporting Board. This was 6 percent above August 1968. The January-August hatch was
up 6 percent from the same period last year. Broiler-type eggs in incubators on
September 1 were 11 percent above a year earlier.

Egg-type chicks hatched during August totaled 38 million, up 3 percent from a
year earlier. Regions with increases were: West North Central, 17 percent; South
Atlantic, 9 percent; and the West, 7 percent. The South Central Region was about
the same as a year earlier while regions showing declines were: North Atlantic, 10
percent and East North Central, 4 percent. The January-August hatch was up 3 percent
from a year earlier. Egg-type eggs in incubators on September 1 were up 3 percent
from the same date in 1968.

POULT PRODUCTION

The hatch of all breed poults during August totaled 3,866,000, up 11 percent
from a year earlier. Heavy breed hatch at 2,562,000 was up 36 percent while light
breed hatch at 1,304,000 was down 19 percent. During the first 8 months of 1969,
hatch of all breeds totaled 106,120,000, up 1 percent from the same period in 1968.
Turkey eggs in incubators on September 1 were 21 percent below a year earlier.



Heavy breed turk tested by. ficial Sta;e agencies for pullorum disease

Broiler-type birds tested in August totaled 2,053,044, up 11 percent from
August 1968. Egg-type birds tested, during August 1969 at 341,356 were down 10 per-
cent from the same month a year earlier.
