Chick Production

Hatcheries producedT1l, 350, 000 chicks during October compared with 203,399,000
in October 1964, according to the Crop Reporting Board. The hatch of broiler chicks
totaled 193,636,000, up 11 percent from October last year and the largest of record
for the month. During the first 10 months of 1965 there were 2,094,583,000 broiler
chicks produced, an increase of 8 percent from January-October 1964 and the largest
of record for these months. The number of broiler-type eggs in incubators on
November 1 was 10 percent above a year earlier.

There were 27,714, 000 egg-type chicks hatched in October, down 4 percent from
October 1964. Reported decreases were 11 percent in the Western States, 7 percent
in the East North Central and 5 percent in the South Atlantic States. No change from
October last year was reported in the West North Central States. Increases reported
were 3 percent in the North Atlantic States and 1 percent in the South Central States.
The hatch of egg-type chicks during the first 10 months of 1965 totaled 438, 082, 000 -
a decrease of 8 percent from the same period last year. The number of "egg-type"
eggs in incubators on November 1 was up 13 percent from a year earlier.
Poult Production

Heavy breed poults hatched in October totaled 804, 000 an increase of 14 percent
from October a year earlier. The hatch of heavy white breeds at 609, 000 was up 19
percent. The hatch of other heavy breeds at 195,000 was up 2 percent. Production
of light breeds totaled 848, 000 up 26 percent from October 1964. There were
109, 921, 000 poults hatched during the first 10 months of 1965, an increase of 5 per-
cent over the same 10 months period in 1964. The number of heavy breed eggs in
incubators on November 1 was up 30 percent from a year earlier. The number of
light breed eggs in incubators was up 15 percent.

capacities by size of egg capacity and by regions for January 1, 1961, 1963, and 1965
for chickens and turkeys.
