Hatcheries produced 215,302,000 chicks during September compared with
194,728,000 in September 1964, according to the Crop Reporting Board. The hatch
of broiler chicks totaled 186,371, 000, up 12 percent from September last year and
the largest of record for the month. During the first nine months of 1965 there were
1, 900, 947, 000 broiler chicks produced, an increase of 7 percent from January-
September 1964 and the largest of record for these months. The number of broiler-
type eggs in incubators on October 1 was 11 percent above a year earlier.

There were 28, 931, 000 egg-type chicks hatched in September, up 2 percent from
September 1964. Reported increases were 9 percent in the South Atlantic States, 7
percent in the South Central, and 6 percent in the Western States. No change from
September last year was reported in the North Atlantic States. Decreases reported
were 11 percent in the West North Central and 8 percent in the East North Central
States. The hatch of egg-type chicks during the first 9 months of 1965 totaled
410, 368, 000 a decrease of 9 percent from same period last year. The number of
"egg-type" eggs in incubators on October 1 was up 7 percent from a year earlier.

Poult Production

Heavy breed poults hatched in September totaled 957, 000 an increase of 40 per-
cent from September 1964. The hatch of heavy white breeds at 838, 000 was up 63
percent. The hatch of other heavy breeds at 119,000 was down 30 percent. Produc-
tion of light breeds totaled 796,000 up 13 percent from September 1964. There
were 108,269,000 poults hatched during the first 9 months of 1965, an increase of
5 percent over the 9-months period in 1964. The number of heavy breed eggs in
incubators on October 1 was up 14 percent from a year earlier. The number of
light breeds in incubators was up 21 percent.
