Chick Production

Hatcheries produced 256,137, 000 chicks during July compared with 233,586, 000
in July 1964, according to the Crop Reporting Board. The hatch of broiler chicks
totaled 223, 331, 000, up 11 percent from July last year and the largest of record for
the month. During the first 7 months of 1965 there were 1,507, 319, 000 broiler
chicks produced, an increase of 6 percent from January-July 1964 and the largest
of record for these months. The number of broiler-type eggs in incubators on
August 1 was 10 percent above a year earlier.

There were 32, 806, 000 egg-type chicks hatched in July, up 1 percent from
July 1964. Reported increases were 39 percent in the South Central States, 21
percent in the South Atlantic and 16 percent in the West North Central States.
Reported decreases were 21 percent in the North Atlantic States, 19 percent in the
Western and 8 percent in the East North Central States. The hatch of egg-type
chicks during the first 7 months of 1965 totaled 352,291,000 a decrease of 11 per-
cent from the same period last year. The number of "egg-type" eggs in incubators
on August 1 was up 10 percent from a year earlier.

Poult Production

Heavy breed poults hatched in July totaled 8, 067, 000 an increase of 26 per-
cent from July 1964. The hatch of heavy white breeds at 4, 733, 000 was up 38 per-
cent. The hatch of other heavy breeds at 3, 334, 000 was up 11 percent from July
1964. Production of light breed poults totaled 1, 950, 000 up 13 percent from
July last year. There were 102,811, 000 turkey poults hatched during the first
7 months of 1965 an increase of 4 percent over the 7 months period in 1964. The
number of heavy breed eggs in incubators on August 1 was up 43 percent from a
year earlier. The number of light breed eggs in incubators was down 1 percent
from August 1 last year.
