Chick Production

_Hatcheries produced 304, 825,000 chicks during May, compared with
297, 074, 000 in May 1964, according to the Crop Reporting Board. The hatch of
broiler chicks totaled 236, 227, 000, up 8 percent from May last year and the largest
hatch of record for the month. During the first 5 months of 1965 there were
1,055,370,000 broiler chicks produced, an increase of 4 percent from January-
May 1964 and the largest of record for these months. The number of broiler-type
eggs in incubators on June 1 was 7 percent above June 1, a year ago.


There were 68, 598, 000 egg-type chicks hatched in May--down 11 percent from
May 1 964 and the smallest May hatch of egg-type chicks of record. All regions
of the country reported decreases; 19 percent in the North Atlantic States, 17
percent in the West North Central, 7 percent in the West, 6 percent in the East
North Central, and 4 percent in the South Atlantic and South Central. The hatch of
egg-type chicks during the first 5 months this year totaled 271, 587, 000 chicks--
a decrease of 14 percent from the same period last year and the smallest egg-type
hatch of record for these months. The number of "egg-type" eggs in incubators
on June 1 was up 3 percent from a year earlier.

Poult Production

Heavy breed poults hatched in May were 21, 021, 000--an increase of 5 percent
from May 1964. The hatch of heavy white breeds at 9, 961, 000 was up 25 percent
from a year earlier. The hatch of other heavy breeds at 11, 060, 000 was
down 7 percent from May last year. Production of light breed poults totaled
1, 650, 000--down 10 percent from May a year ago. There were 75, 250, 000 turkey
poults hatched during the first 5 months of 1965--an increase of 2 percent. The
number of heavy breed eggs in incubators on June 1 was up 4 percent from a year
earlier. The number of light breed eggs in incubators was down 10 percent from
June 1 last year.
