Chick Production L_ U DEPOSITORY


Hatcheries produced 297,342,000 chicks during April 1965 compared with
300, 643, 000 in April 1964, according to the Crop Reporting Board. Broiler chicks
hatched during April totaled 223, 304, 000, up 6 percent from April last year and
the largest hatch for the month of record. During the first 4 months of 1965 there
were 819,143, 000 broiler chicks produced, an increase of 4 percent from the same
period in 1964 and the highest of record for these months. The number of broiler-
type eggs in incubators on May 1 was 5 percent above May 1 last year.

There were 74, 038, 000 egg-type chicks hatched in April down 17 percent
from April 1964 and the smallest April hatch of egg-type chicks of record. All
sections of the country reported decreases, 22 percent in the West North Central,
21 percent in the North Atlantic, 19 percent in the East North Central, 13 percent
in the West, 10 percent in the SouthAtlantic, and 5 percent in the South Central
States. The hatch of egg-type chicks during the first 4 months of 1965 totaled
202, 989, 000 a decrease of 15 percent from the same period last year and the
smallest egg-type hatch of record for these months. The number of egg-type eggs
in incubators on May 1 was down 11 percent from May 1 last year.


Poult Production

Heavy breed poults hatched in April were 20,484, 000, an increase of 1 percent
from April 1964. The hatch of heavy white breeds, at 9,563, 000, was up 21 per-
cent from a year earlier. The hatch of other heavy breeds at 10, 921, 000 was down
11 percent from April last year. Production of light breed poults totaled 1,185,000-
down 9 percent from April last year. There were 52,579, 000 turkey poults hatched
during the first 4 months of 1965 about the same as during these months in 1964.
The number of heavy breed eggs in incubators on May 1 was up 2 percent from a
year earlier. The number of light breed eggs in incubators was down 11 percent
from May 1 last year.
