Chick Production

Chick production by hatcheries during March 1965 was 277, 464, 000 compared
with 286, 303, 000 in March 1964, according to the Crop Reporting Board. Broiler
chicks hatched during March totaled 217, 232, 000, up 2 percent from March last
year. During the first three months of 1965 there were 595, 839, 000 broiler chicks
produced--up 3 percent from comparable period last year. The number of broiler-
type eggs in incubators on April 1 was up 5 percent from April 1 last year.

There were 60, 232, 000 egg-type chicks hatched in March--down 19 percent
from March 1964 and the smallest March hatch of record. All sections of the
country reported decreases--24 percent in the North Atlantic and West North -
Central States, 22 percent in the East North Central, 16 percent in the South
Atlantic, 14 percent in the West and 7 percent in the South Central States. The
number of egg-type eggs in incubators on April 1 was down 19 percent from April 1
last year.

Poult Production

Heavy breed poults hatched in March were 17, 775, 000--up 1 percent from
March 1964. The hatch of heavy white breeds was 7, 965, 000--an increase of 19
percent. The hatch of other heavy breeds (mostly broad-breasted bronze) totaled
9, 810, 000--down 10 percent from March last year. Production of light breed
poults totaled 989, 000--down 4 percent from March last year. There were
30, 910, 000 turkey poults hatched during the first 3 months of 1965--about the
same as during these months in 1964. The number of heavy breed eggs in incuba-
tors on April 1 was down 3 percent from April 1 last year. The number of light
breed eggs in incubators on April 1 was down 16 percent from April 1 last year.
