Number of Hatcheries and Egg Capacity Reported January 1, 1965

The number of chick hatcheries operating in the United States on January 1,
1965 was 2, 365 compared with 2, 911 on January 1, 1963 and 6, 890 on January 1,
1953. Egg capacity of hatcheries in the United States operating January 1, 1965
was 471,318,000 eggs compared with 494, 446, 000 on January 1, 1963. Between
January 1, 1963 and January 1, 1965 there was an increase in both the number and
egg capacity of hatcheries with 500, 000 egg capacity and over, and this group ac-
counted for over 45 percent of the total egg capacity. On January 1, 1963
hatcheries of 500, 000 egg capacity and over had 37 percent of the total egg
capacity. In 1965 hatcheries with a capacity of 100,000 eggs and over had 86 per-
cent of the total egg capacity compared with 83 percent of the total egg capacity
in 1963 and 61 percent of the total egg capacity in 1953. The decrease in number
of hatcheries operating during the past two years was general throughout the
country. Increases in egg capacity was reported in only two regions of the
country--the South Atlantic and South Central regions.

Fewer and larger turkey hatcheries has been the trend during the past 6 years
of available statistics. The 453 hatcheries operating as of January 1, 1965 com-
pares with 551 on January 1, 1963 and 682 on January 1, 1959. Egg capacity of
the turkey hatcheries decreased also from January 1, 1963 to January 1, 1965.
Egg capacity decreased from 54, 237, 000 eggs on January 1, 1963 to 51, 085, 000
on January 1, 1965. There was an increase in both number and egg capacity
between 1963 and 1965 in turkey hatcheries having egg capacities of 500, 000 eggs
and over. The increase in number was from 11 to 17. The increase in egg
capacity was from 7,560,000 eggs to 10, 820, 00f eggs. On January 1, 1965
turkey hatcheries having egg capacities of 100, 000 eggs and over had 78 percent
of the total egg capacity of all the turkey hatcheries. On January 1, 1963 this
size group had 74 percent of the total egg capacity and on January 1, 1959, 61
percent of the total egg capacity.
