Chick Production

'Chick production by hatcheries during January 1965 was 222, 246, 000
compared with 211, 843, 000 in January 1964, according to the Crop Reporting
Beard. Broiler chicks totaled 190, 535, 000, up 6 percent from January last
year and the largest output of record for the month. Broiler-type eggs in
incubators on February 1 were up 9 percent from February 1 last year indicating
a larger broiler chick hatch in February 1965 than in February 1964.

There were 31, 711, 000 egg-type chicks hatched in January 1965 about the
same as in January 1964. Increases were 19 percent in the South Atlantic
States, 17 percent in the South Central and 7 percent in the East North Central
States. Decreases reported were 22 percent in the North Atlantic States, 7 per-
cent in the West and 1 percent in the West North Central States. Egg-type eggs
in incubators on February 1 were up 11 percent from February 1, 1964 indicating
a larger egg-type hatch in February 1965 than in February 1964.


Poults Hatched

Heavy breed poults hatched in January 1965 totaled 3,160, 000 down 1 per-
cent from January 1964. The hatch of heavy white breeds totaled 1, 941, 000, an
increase of 4 percent. The hatch of other heavy breeds (mostly broad-breasted
bronze) totaled 1, 219, 000 a decrease of 9 percent. Production of light breed
poults totaled 668,000 7 percent larger than in January 1964. The number of
heavy breed eggs in incubators on February 1, 1965 was up 1 percent from
February 1 last year. The number of light breed eggs in incubators on February 1
was down 4 percent from February 1 last year.
