Chicks Hatched

The number of chicks hatched by commercial hatcheries during February 1963
was 210, 162, 000, about the same as in February a year ago. Of this number
168, 431, 000 were broiler chicks and 41, 731, 000 were egg-type chicks. Production
of broiler chicks was about the same as in February last year. Production of egg-
type chicks was up 4 percent. The number of eggs in incubators on March 1, 1963,
compared with a year earlier indicates that the hatch of chicks (both broiler and
egg-type) in March 1963 will be smaller than in March a year ago.

Poults Hatched

The number of turkey poults hatched in February was larger than a year earlier.
The hatch of heavy white breeds was 2, 594, 000--up 24 percent; other heavy breeds,
4,402, 000--up 26 percent; and light breeds, 645, 000--up 23 percent. There were
10, 964, 000 turkey poults (both heavy and light breeds) hatched during the first two
months of 1963--14 percent more than during the same period in 1962. The number
of turkey eggs in incubators on March 1, 1963, compared with a year earlier indicates
that the hatch of heavy breed poults in March will be larger than in March last year;
The hatch of light breed poults will be smaller.

Number of Hatcheries and Egg Capacity Reported January 1, 1963

The number of chick hatcheries operating in the United States has been decreas-
ing rapidly. The number operating in 48 States January 1, 1963 was 2, 900 compared
with 3, 513 on January 1, 1961 and 6, 890 on January 1, 1953. Egg capacity has de-
creased also during the past 10 years but not as much as the decrease in number of
hatcheries would suggest. Many smaller hatcheries have gone out of business. Some
of those remaining have become larger. Egg capacity of hatcheries in the 48 States
operating January 1, 1963 was 493, 797, 000 eggs, compared with 508, 500, 000 on
January 1, 1961 and 562, 237, 000 on January 1, 1953. In 1963 hatcheries with a capac-
ity of 100, 000 eggs and over had 83 percent of the total egg capacity. In 1961 hatch-
eries of 100, 000 egg capacity and over had 78 percent of the total egg capacity and in
1953 they had 61 percent of the total egg capacity. The largest decreases in number
of hatcheries operating and in egg capacity have taken place in the Mid-Atlantic, East

North Central and West North Central regions. The poultry industry in
these important producing areas has been decreasing steadily since 1955.

The number of chick hatcheries decreased in all regions of the country
during the past 2 years. The decreases in number of hatcheries ranged
from 7 in the Mountain States to 219 in the West North Central States. Not
all regions showed decreases in egg capacity during this period. Increases
in egg capacity were reported in the regions that produce most of the com-
mercial broilers--the South Atlantic, East South Central, West South Cen-
tral, and Pacific Coast regions. The largest increase was in the West
South Central States where the increase in egg capacity was 9 million eggs.
The largest decrease in egg capacity during the past 2 years was in the West
North Central region where capacity decreased by 17 million eggs.
Fewer and larger turkey hatcheries has been the trend during the past 4
years of available statistics. The 551 turkey hatcheries operating as of
January 1, 1963 compares with 621 on January 1, 1961 and 682 on January 1,
1959. While the number of turkey hatcheries has decreased, total egg ca -
pacity has increased. Egg capacity increased from 49, 730, 000 eggs on
January 1, 1959.to 54, 237, 000 on January 1, 1963. Egg capacity of the
turkey hatcheries on January 1, 1959 was 45, 544, 000 eggs. On January 1,
1963 turkey hatcheries having egg capacities of 100, 000 eggs and over had
74 percent of the total egg capacity of all the turkey hatcheries. On Janu-
ary 1, 1961, this size group had 68 percent of the total egg capacity and on
January 1, 1959, 61 percent of the total egg capacity.
