Number of hatcheries and egg capacity, January 1, 1969

The number of chick hatcheries operating in the United States on
January 1, 1969 was 1,486 compared with 1,932 on January 1, 1967 and
2,365 on January 1, 1965. Current egg capacity of these hatcheries was
453,669,000 compared with 468,143,000 two years earlier.

The number of chick hatcheries decreased in all regions during the
past two years. Egg capacities were down in all regions except the South
Atlantic and South Central regions which were up 5 and 3 percent respec-
tively. Hatcheries with egg capacity of 500,000 and over increased in
both number and capacity from 1967 to 1969. This group accounted for
61 percent of the total egg capacity on January 1, 1969, up from 54 per-
cent on January 1, 1967.

The trend of fewer and larger turkey hatcheries continues. On Janu-
ary 1, 1969 there were 303 hatcheries operating--26 percent fewer than two
years earlier. During this period egg capacity declined from 56,983,000
to 53,763,000. Hatcheries with capacities of 500,000 and over increased
in both number and egg capacity between 1967 and 1969. Turkey hatcheries
having capacities of 100,000 to 499,999 eggs declined in both number and
capacity since January 1, 1967.
