1972 ANNUAL SUMMARY

-Release;.
January 16, 1973
3:00 P. M. EST

Honey production in the United States during 1972 totaled 214.6 mil-
lion pounds--up 9 percent from the 1971 crop, according to the Crop Reporting
Board. This year's honey crop was produced by 4.1 million colonies, down 1
percent from a year earlier. Colony numbers have declined each year since
1958. Yield of honey per colony was 52.8 pounds, compared with 48.0 in 1971.
Beeswax production totaled 4.0 million pounds in 1972, 12 percent more than
was produced in 1971.

In mid-December, producers reported 30.0 million pounds of honey on hand
for sale, compared with 30.9 million pounds the previous year. Stocks in mid-
December represented 14 percent of the 1972 honey production compared with 16
percent in 1971.

The honey flow was generally more favorable than in 1971, especially in
North and South Dakota, where late summer rains made possible an excellent crop.
California with 500 thousand colonies produced 24.5 million pounds, 11 percent
of the Nation's production. Florida with 350 thousand colonies produced 26.6
million pounds.

Honey producers received an average of 31.3 cents per pound for honey
during 1972, 44 percent above the 1971 average price of 21.8 cents per pound and
the highest price since 1947. These prices relate to all wholesale and retail
sales, extracted, chunk and comb honey from apiaries owned by farmers and non-
farmers. (Continued on page 9)

Revision in Estimates: The 1965-69 honey and beeswax
estimates were reviewed and revised, if necessary. The
revised estimates wpre based on a thorough review of the
original estimates taking into consideration current
survey data collected during the period and other in-
formation such as State inspection records, estimates
by State apiary inspectors and entomologists, and re-
ports from commercial honey buyers and packers. Re-
vised estimates by States for the years 1965-69 are
shown in Statistical Bulletin No. 500 "Honey Production".
This bulletin is available on request.
