REPORTED INCIDENCE OF NOTIFIABLE DISEASES IN THE UNITED STATES, 1963


This Supplement carries final figures on the reported
incidence of notifiable diseases in 1963 based on sum-
maries submitted by the individual States and Territories
of the United States.


BOTULISM IN 1963

In 1963 a total of 47 cases was reported, the largest
number reported in any single year since 1947 when
botulism case data were first compiled by State by year.
In that year 39 States reported 44 cases.




REPORTED CASES OF BOTULI

The map below shows the distribution of botulism
cases reported in 1963 classified by source of infection,
commercial or non-commercial products.
Contaminated home-prepared foodstuffs which con-
tributed to botulism cases in 1963 included chili peppers,
green beans, corn, mushrooms, figs, beets and home
smoked white fish; commercial products included liver
paste, tuna fish, smoked white fish and smoked white fish
chubs.
Of the 23 cases originating from home-prepared
foodstuffs, 9 terminated fatally; and of the 24 originating
from commercially prepared products, 6 were fatal.
