ANNUAL SUPPLEMENT

REPORTED INCIDENCE OF NOTIFIABLE DISEASES IN THE UNITED STATES, 1962

This Supplement carries final figures on
the reported incidence of notifiable diseases
in 1962 based on summaries submitted by
the individual States and Territories of the
United States.
In 1962, approximately-500,000 cases of
measles were reported, admittedly less than
probably occurred, but sufficient to indicate
the trend of the disease. The graph below
shows the number of reported cases for the
past five years, and the number of recorded
deaths during the past four. These are shown
by month on an overlapping log scale.

Reported Cases and

The seasonal distribution of the data
shows that the number of deaths parallels
the number of cases: in the early spring
months when measles cases are at a maxi-
mum, the number of deaths reaches a
maximum, and similarly during the summer
months when measles cases are at a mini-
mum, deaths are few.
With the advent of measles vaccines,
the year 1962 may mark a point of change
in the regular recurring annual curves which
have been strikingly consistent over the
past years for this disease.
