At Mambo Vye Zo Komande LaMenfo’s temple, called Sosyete Du Marche, the Marasa are celebrated every year since many of the community’s family members have twin children. In these photographs, Zahara and Zahir Moreno sit as the Marasa for our celebration. Zahara was very into it, but Zahir was a little less enthusiastic! The community asked the twins to bless candles, so each person handed them two candles. The twins bent their little heads over the candle for a moment and then demanded payment to get the candles back! After being paid (nickels and dimes mostly), they then demanded that the person do something silly, like hop on one foot or bark like a dog! It was a wonderful night of laughter for us all! After honoring the Marasa, we finished the reglemen (the ceremony) with the standard salutes and salutations. And who did we find following along but little Zahara—on her knees, lustily singing for Papa Ogou (see the fourth picture). The experience reminded us of the Biblical quote, “...and a child shall lead them.” Their stamina is better than ours. When the night finished, Zahir filled his pockets with coins, his mouth with candy, his hands with cookies and declared, “This was the best night - EVER!” Ayibobo indeed!
