'Gunboat Diplomacy' Gains Respect
"Gunboat Diplomacy" is an expression used to de-
scribe our Latin American policy during the 1920s, but
it is likely to receive a respect never before enjoyed as a
result of the recent incident involving five such boats.
The derring-do of the Israelis involved in the exploit
which captured the imagination of the world is ani
example of the determination of the Jewish state to protect
iself against the hypocrisy of the Great Powers. Their
double-talk and double-dealing is exposed to the view oi
all by this new kind of "Gunboat Diplomacy" which is
c tribute to Israel's missionwhich now appears to
keep the rest of the world honest.
Shift In CJA Leadership
The tremendous expansion of Greater Miami's Jewish
community during the past five years has been a mixed
blessing in terms of support for local, national and overseas
projects under the Combined Jewish Appeal blanket.
It is, therefore, heartening to see the progress made in
the residential division, which has always been a weak
point in local campaigns due to the lack of manpower to
cover the large territory and numbers of people. The spec-
tacular growth of high-rise buildings in the Greater M
area has provided a natural community in which new-
comersand many old-timers as wellmay be reached
with ease and brought into the mainstrecm of Jewish life.
Bolstered by an optimistic outlook and the dedication
of many building volunteers, it is quite likely that this year
the dominant leadership of the Combined Jewish Apper.L
will at last be the great mass of Jewish residents rather
than the usual wealthy contributors.
Calls Echoing From Every Corner
The calls for improvement in Jewish education con-
tinue to echo from every corner of the community as the
Hebrew Academy of Greater Miami marks the completion
cf the initial phase of its growth Sunday night at the 22nd
annual Scholarship Dinner held by the South's largest
Hebrew day school, which has an enrollment of more than
700 students, overflowing its capacity.
The past year has seen the opening of a new, fully-
staffed branch of the educational institution in Southwest
Dade County, with which to meet the demands of the rapid-
ly growing Jewish community in Coral Gables. South
Miami, Westchester, Kendall and surrounding areas. The
branch's immediate acceptance is demonstrated bv the
fact that its classes are already full.
The year ahead calls for the start o! constructor, on a
new junior high school building adjacent to the present
facilities on Pine Tree Drive. Those who gather to cele
at the dinner will also plan to raise the funds necess;
maintain as well as to build the new school.

Many Jews Jn Key Positions
Fear that President Nixon would not continue the policy
of previous chief executives in making Jewish appoint-
ments has been somewhat allayed by the naming oi a
number of Jews to prestigious posts, the latest of which is
Dr. Jesse Leonard Steinfeld, a Califomian. to the office of
Surgeon General.
Though they do not get the publicity enjoyed by the
John F. Kennedy men, two of President Nixon's closest ad-
visors are Henry Kissiager and Arthur Burns, and there are
a number of others in key positions.

To Friends Of The Jewish Home
(Douglas Gardens)
Please Help
O^r Thrift Shop (7300 N.W. 27th Ave., Miami) urgently
needi your help NOW.
Tr-e Home's costs or* sly-rocket ng because of steeply
r.iing costs. 117 nurses aides, orderlies, maids, porters
o-d tood service personnel had to be raised from $1.15
u $ 50 per hour minimum.
-ige increase alone will cost the Home on ad-
dional $100,000 in 1969.
A-J we remind you that the Home's finoncial problems
ore aqgravoted because it gives the top admission
p- witf lo the indigent 85% (188 out oi 222) of our res-
ije-is are public welfare recipients.
Tn Home's deficit is mounting with frightening rapidity.
The Thrift Shop, therefore, must render much greater
financial help to Douglas Gardens.
Von can help the Home meet its growing deficit
and contiflOS to give admissim priority to the
null gent by contributing furniture, furnishings,
appliances, clothing, etc. to the Thrift Shop.
You can also be o great help by getting your neighbors,
apartment, motel and hotel owners to contribute to the
Thrift Shop.
All contributions are tax deductible.
Phone the Thrift Shop at 696 2101 and arrange for our
truck to pick up.
Appreciatively,
AARON KRAVITZ,
JHA V.P. & Choirman,

According to the account pub-

to find a brand new Russian-

across a prize. They called for
cargo helicopters and for ace-

to cut the seven-ton radar unit
