The 'Sane 70s?1 We Can Hope...
Hope springs eternal In man'- breast, as witness
articlesOTd editorials anticipating the decade o! the 19 --
just beginning.
Those of us who have survived the Roaring _'2Cs I
Dep-essed '30s, the War-Terr. 40s. the Frightening
and the Riotous '60s are not about to make any predictions
in view of that record. But given our eternal hop?
else do we survive?-we car. still wish for a decade tha.
future historians will be able to label the Sane Us ...
beginning, of course, with this new year.
Brothers Illustrate Opposite Views
David Rockefeller, banker. Nelson Rockefeller, gov-1
Of New York. A short description of two brothers
could very well be an important lessen tor all Ami
and, particularly, American lews.
The economic and political dilemma c! our gov<
ment as it wrestles with the continuing crisis in the Middle
East seems well-illustrated in the differing viewpou l
the Rockefeller brothers. Tr.e banker, along with other in-
fluential business leaders, "neve warned that the U.S
government was losing its infiuer.ee in the Arab w:
because of its policies. The politician has made il
that it is important for the government to continue mili-
tary aid to Israel and to work for direct negotiations in thi
Middle East to achieve c lasting peace.
It will do no good to ignore the obvious dichitomy '
exists in the American establishment. There is the potenti
market of 100 million Arabs in underdeveloped nations
and there is the great European and American dependence
on the oil of the Middle East controlled by seme cf the Ai
states. There is, in America at least cpprec'.c::on e:
Jewish vote, of its economic end intellectual power
vestiges of a moral obligator, for the tole our govern::
played in the destruction of 6 million European Jew-
Hitler.
The drama is being played out in the embassies and
on the bourses of the world in c su .. vhich most c I
can only watch with a degree of : tion because c:
helplessness. We car. only .oral cone*
which still affect political decisions will overcome the pt
of business whose moral stance is conl I to the size of
profits.
