My9~ dear Sir:
I am a totally disabled veteran of th'e~ Spanish-American
and the First World War, service connected. .For a number of' years
since my disabilities have prevented my working at my life pro-
feasion, I have been writing. I am now completing a history of
the Nlegro under the title: "MEeasuring From W~here They Started."
I am a grandson of a Missippi slave owner, and I bnve
set myself the job of helping in some small way to solve the race
pRoblem in the South. I have a chapter in this book entitled
The N~egro In Polities". I am making request that you give me
premission to use an article written by Zora Neal Hu~stons entitled~;
"I saw Negro Vfotes Peddled"s that you published about three years'
ago.
ir****** ----.
To my way of thinking this is one of the finest things
that has ever been written on the subject, Our South is to be
overrun again by outside politicians as was done during Reconstrue-
tion. MIy book will give Ithis artildle a very wide publicityy and
will help us defend ourselves. Pleases please give me permission
to use it. I have no income of any kind except my.compensration
for disa iitiess but ife payment for its use is demanded, I will
do my b to pay whatever is demanded. I have a copy of the
articl & *

Ma I have your answer as soon as possible
SCordially,

William T. rgan
