Thursday A.M.

Dear Jean:

By this place being off the main line, your letter of May 2

just reached me yesterday after four oclock. I did not go to the

P.O. in the morning as usual., I tried to figure out the quickest

way to get in touch with you.

This business of the retaiew, and trying to horn in on my idea

about Taft gives you a slight idea. The first thing too many

Negroes do when they want to be writers and public characters in

general is to grab something from me, mad then hate me for being alive

to make their pretensions out a lie. And then take all kinds of steps

to head me off. Bliocke that Zora Neale Huraton!" is3 a regular slogan.

I go in the out of the wa'y places and collect and gather, and then

they sit on their rumnps in New York and filch from me. Someday I shall

tell you some incidents that will astonish you, while disgusting you.

No, I do not want to stay with Ann Watkins,Inc. a~ny more. A
firm with no more honor than to make the ideas andi work of one autho~cr

availa le to another. It stinks like a million dead mules on a mile

of manure. But at any rate, you must have known that I would go along

with you. So here it is in writing. I finish the same day you do,

May 31. Wish this article was not hanging in the balance right now

The difficulty of getting congressional records has held me back ,and

depending on some one to get them. for me, e. hopgee that failed. But

I have a source in Miami now, and will have everything in your hands

at your home address in a jiffy,

Most sincerely,
