Announcing the J. M. Derscheid Collection online The University of Florida LibrariesÂ’ Digital Services and Shared Collections department and Special and Area Studies Collections are proud to announce the online launch of the J. M. Derscheid Collection The J. M. Derscheid Collection online project is a UF Libraries and UF Center for African Studies funded project based on the digitization of the J. M. Derscheid Collection, a rich set of primarily French language manuscripts relating to pre colonial and colonial era Burundi, Eastern Congo and Rwanda. The J. M. Derscheid Collection includes approximately 2,500 manuscript pages, illustrations and maps relating to Rwanda and Burundi (former Ruanda Urundi), with some materials on the Kivu and Oriental provinces of the former Belgian Congo (Democratic Republic of Congo). These unique and rare materials document the culture and history of the region. They were created and collected by Jean Marie Derscheid, a zoologist and wildlife conservationist who undertook historical research on Rwanda and the Eastern Congo from 1924 1939. Derscheid's scholar curated collection of research materials is an important resource for interdisciplinary research in the area. The J. M. Derscheid Collection joins the Photographs of Africa Collection within the UF Digital Collections ( http://ufdc.ufl.edu ). Like the J. M. Derscheid Collection, all materials in the UF Digital Collections are freely and fully accessible. See the J. M.
