WATER-BORNE TRADE BY UNITED STATES PORT


FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OCTOBER 20 1949


Export figures include reexports, trade be-
tween Alaska, Hawaii and Fuerto Rico and foreign
countries, export shipments to United States
Government agencies except the U.S. Armed Forces
and exports under the various foreign relief
programs made on commercial vessels only. Ex-
cluded from export figures are shipments to the
United States Armed Forces abroad for their own
use, shipments on Army- or Navy-operated vessels
as described below, shipments between continen-
tal United States and the Territories and Pos-
sesions, shipments between the Territories .nd
Possessions. Exports by vessel are credited to
the Customs District and port st which the mer-
chandise was laden.


Import figures are general imports and rep-
resent the total of imports for immediate con-
saumption plus entries into Customs bonded stor-
age and manufacturing warehouses. Imports by
vessel are credited to the Customs District and
port at which the merchandise was unladen, even
though this may be different from the Customs
District in which the goods were entered into
warehouses or entered for immediate consumption.

These figures do not include departures of
cargo moving intransit under band through the
United States from one foreign country to an-
other. Information on such shipments moving by
vessel is presented in report FT 981.
Export shipments on Army- or Navy operated
vessels which are included in the total United

States export stat sties such as in reports
PT 900, 930, 950, 410, 420, etc., are not in-
cluded in tne export figures shown in this re-
port; but information on such shipments is pre-
sented in report FT 976. Army- or Navy-operated
vessel shipments represent export shipments under
special programs such as Civilian Supply, C.C.A.,
Greek-Turkish Aid, etc., made by the Department
of the Anny or Department of Navy under the fol-
lowing arrangements:
1. Shipments under these programs by the
Departments of the Army and Navy on
American-flag commercial vessels. In
most cases the vessels are chartered by
the Army or Navy under time charter,
voyage charter or spare charter arrange-
ments.
2. Shipments under these programs by the
Department of the Army and Navy on Army
or Navy transports (vessels owned and
operated by the Army or Navy).
Import shipments on Army- or Navy-operated
vessels Mtich are included in the total United
States import statistics such as in reports
FT 900, 930, 950, 110, 120, etc., are not In-
cluded In the import figures shown in this re-
port. Information on such imports may be ob-
tained as a special report prepared on a cost
basis. None of the import or export figures have
been adjusted for change in price level.
The data presented in this report are pre-
liminary and subject to revision.
