Coverage


Export figures include reexports, trade
between Alaska, Hawaii, and Fuerto Rico and
foreign countries,export shipments to Unit-
ed States Government agencies except the
U. S. Armed Forces and exports under the
various foreign relief programs made on
commercial vessels only. Ex:ludea from ex-
port figures are snip.nents to tne United
States Armed Forces abroad for their own
use, shipments by the Department of the
Army to occupied countries under Its Civil-
!an Supply Program, snipments between con-
tinental United States and the territories
and Possessions, and shipments between tne
Territories and Possessions.

Exports by vessel are credited to the
trade area in whlch the merchandise was un-
laden, while imports are credited to the
trade area In Which the merchandise 1 as
laden.

The import figures are general imports
and represent the total of Imports for Im-
mediate consumption plus entries into Cus-
toms bonded storage and manufacturing ware-
houses.

Shipments on Army-or Navy-operated ves-
sels and shipments in transit through the


United States from one foreign country to
another are not Included in either the Im-
port or export figures. Army-or Navy-oper-
ated vessels represent export shipments
under special programs such as Civilian
Supply, Interim Ald,Greek-Turkish Aid, etc.
and Import shipments made by the Department
of tne Army or Department of the Navy unaer
the following arrangements:

1. Shipments under those programs by
the Derartments of the Army ana
Ilavy on American-flag commercial
vessels. In most cases the vessels
are chartered by the Army or Navy
under time charter, voyage charter
or space charter arrangements.

2. Snipments under these programs by
tne DepartmentE of the Army and
Navy on Army or Navy transports
(vessels owned and operated by the
Army or rJav:.).

None of the import or export figures have
teen adjusted for change in price level.

The data presented in the following
tariles are preliminary and Include revl-
slcns wnich have been made since the re-
lease of data for May 1948.
