UNITED STATES FOREIGN TRADE

BUREAU OF THE CENSUS
j. C. C0I1, Dr.lw-

MAY 1948

WATER-BORNE TRADE BY UNITED STATES PORT

FOR IMMEDIAT LE

Export figures include reexports, trade
between Alaska. Howaii, and Puerto Rico and
foreign countries,export shipments to Unit-
ed States Government agencies except the
U. 8. Armd Forces and exports under the
various foreign relief programs made on
comarclal vessels only. Excluded from ex-
port figures are shipments to the United
States Armed Forces abroad for their own
use, shipments by the Department of the Army
to occupied countries under its Civilian
Supply Program, shipments between continen-
tal talted States and the Territories and
Posssessons, and shipments between the Ter-
ritories and Possessions.

Exports by vessel are credited to the
trade area in which the merchandise was un-
laden, While imports are credited to the
trade area in which the merchandise was
laden.

The import figures are general imports
and represent the total of imports for Im-
mediate consumption plus entries into Cue-
tomn bonded storage and manufacturing ware-
houses.

Shipmnts on Army-or Navy-operated ves-
eels and shipments in transit through the

United States from one foreign country to
another are not included in either the import
or export figures. Army-or I[avy-operated
vessels represent export shipments under
.special programs such as Civilian Supply,
Interim Aid, Creek-Turkish Aid, etc. and
Import shipments made by the Department of
the Army or Department of the Navy under
the following arrangements:

1. Shipments under those programs by
the Departments of the Army and
Navy on American-flag commercial
vessels. In most cases the vessels
are chartered by the Army or Navy
under time charter, voyage charter
or space charter arrangements.
2. Shipments under these programs by
the Departments of the Army and
Navy on Army or Navy transports
(vessels owned and operated by the
Army or Navy)

None of the import or export figures have
been adjusted for change In price level.

The data presented In the following
tables are preliminary and include revi-
sions which have been made since the re-
lease of data for April 1948.
