1945-49 *
Say 1953
SeWid estimates of farm production, disposition and income from turkeys are pre-
.i.i this report for the years 1945-49. These revisions resulted from a review
s of the 1950 Ceanus of Agriculture enumeration of turkeys on farms April 1
Raised during 1949 and of other available data relating to the production
p gition of turkeys. Revised estimates of breeder hens and all turkeys on Jan-
:, 1945-5 also appear in this bulletin.
ea ae These estimates are based primarily upon Census reports relating
oKa raised in 1944 and 1949 adjusted in line with available records of market
,i shipments, and assessors' enumerations. Annual changes are based upon indi-
c sange in numbers of turkeys on farms August 1 as reported by turkey producers,
*n the numbers raised as reported at the end of the year.
I..Lo":" 1 Inventory Numbers: Inventory numbers of turkeys on farms January 1, 1950
L biased primarily upon the Census enumeration of turkeys on farms April 1, 1950 ads
ta. for changes in numbers between January 1 and the date of enumeration. A special
Swas made in April 1950 to obtain information on this change in numbers, Annnal
S... es in the estimates for intervening years are based on surveys of turkey grovers.
ebath Loss of Turkeys on Farms January 1: The estimates of the annual death loss
pnkseys on farms January 1 for 1945 and 1949 are derived from the average per farm
4 as reported by turkey producers, multiplied by the number of turkey farms enumer-
by the Census. Annual changes are based upon changes in the average annual loss
ter1 as reported on February 1 each year adjusted to show changes in the number of
S farms between Census enumerations. These losses represent the loss of breeding
:only, since losses of other birds on farms January 1 are insignificant.
te produced This estimate represents the net annual farm production of tur-
;::ecmputed from the number raised during the year, less the death loss of turkeys
y.Swe on hand at the beginning of the year.
S.n'um" t ion: Consumption of turkeys in the households of farm producers is
anted from a series of reports received annually from crop correspondents who re-
Show many of their own turkeys are consumed in their households. The average con-
on per turkey farm was multiplied by the estimated number of farms raising turkeys.
Ba eS he annual sales are equal to the estimated production adjusted for inven-
Schan es, less the consumption in farm households.
jbLeat3 The average value per head of turkeys on hand January 1 is based upon the
"ln- reported by general reporters. The average annual price per pound of turkeys
1t illght is computed from monthly farm prices per pound and the estimated pounds of
*:I y sold each month.
A wraM e Vseiht uaer' Takje Soldt ,The average live weight of turkeys sold is estima-
.ei from the average weights of turkey hens and tome sold during the year as reported by
t.:~ke' producers at the end of the year.
j i Jmaeg Cash receipts from turkeys are computed by multiplying the yearly total
Idunfl of turkeys sold by the estimated average annual price per pound received by farm-
We. Gross income is caeh receipts plui the value of turkeys consumed in farm households
ehare produced. Turkey consumed at home is evaluated at the average annual farm price
peW pound.
