MUSHROOM PRODUCTION UP 15 PERCENT-VALUE UP 20 PERCENT

Mushroom production in the United States reached a record high during
the 1977-78 season at 399 million pounds (181 thousand metric tons), 15
percent above the 1976-77 crop and 29 percent more than the 1975-76 crop.
This continued the upward trend in production since the survey began in
1966. This year's survey includes growers with production in 27 States com-
pared with 24 a year earlier. Georgia had no production while Connecticut,
Iowa, Tennessee and Virginia began production during the year. Pennsylvania,
the leading State, grew 220 million pounds or 55 percent of the U S produc-
tion for the 1977-78 season.

The crop is valued at $308 million, up 20 percent ft .,, the 1976-77
season. Growers averaged 77.1 cents per pound compared with 73.7 cents a
year ago. Fresh market sales increased to 191 million pounds this year, up
26 percent from the 1976-77 season and accounted for 48 percent of the U S
production. The fresh price averaged 90.1 cents per pound, an increase of
7.7 cents over the previous season. Processor usage of 208 million pounds
was up 6 percent. Processing prices averagedd 65.2 cents per pound in 1977-78.

Growers used 135 million square feet (12.6 million centares) of bed and
tray area to produce the 1977-78 crop, up 15 percent from the previous season.
Yields averaged 2.95 pounds per square foot, slightly above the 1976-77 yield.

An estimated Wtillion square, feet (13.9 million centares) of produc-
tion area is intended for the 1978-79 crop, an 11 percent increase. If grow-
ers' current plans are carried out, first filling will be up 3 percent, second
filling will be up 4 percent and additional fillings will increase 25 percent.
