MUSHROOM PRODUCTION UP 13 PERCENT-VALUE UP 17 PERCENT

Mushroom production in the United States hit a new record high during
the 1978-79 season at 452 million pounds (205 thousand metric tons), 13
percent above the 1977-78 crop and 30 percent more than the 1976-77 crop.
This continued the upward trend in production since mushroom estimates were
started in 1966. This year's survey includes growers with production in 27
States, the same as a year earlier. Pennsylvania, the leading State, grew
214 million pounds or 47 percent of the U.S. production for the 1978-79
season.

The crop is valued at $360 million, up 17 percent from the 1977-78
season. Growers averaged 79.7 cents per pound compared with 77.1 cents a
year ago. Fresh market sales increased to 228 million pounds this year, up
19 percent from the 1977-78 season and accounted for 50 percent of the U.S.
production. The fresh price averaged 94.9 cents per pound, an increase of
4.8 cents over the previous season. Processor usage of 224 million pounds
was up 8 percent. Processing prices averaged 64.2 cents per pound in 1978-79.

Growers used 147 million square feet (13.6 million centares) of bed and
tray area to produce the 1978-79 crop, up 9 percent from the previous season.
Yields averaged 3.08 pounds per square foot, 4 percent above the 1977-78 yield.

An estimated 155 million square feet (14.4 million centares) of produc-
tion area is intended for the 1979-80 crop, a 6 percent increase. If growers'
current plans are carried out, first filling will be up 2 percent, second
filling will be up 3 percent and additional fillings will increase 10 percent.
