MUSHROOM PRODUCTION UP 4 PERCENT VALUE UP 2 PERCENT

Mushroom production in the United States reached a new record high during
the 1979-80 season at 470 million pounds (213 thousand metric tons). This is
4 percent more than the 1978-79 crop and 18 percent more than production in
1977-78 and continues the upward trend in production since mushroom estimates
were started in 1966. This year's survey includes growers with production in
27 States, the same as a year earlier. Pennsylvania, the leading State, with
45 percent of the U.S. 1979-80 crop, grew 214 million pounds, virtually the
same as the previous year.

The value of the 1979-80 crop is $369 million, up 2 percent from the
1978-79 season. Growers averaged 78.4 cents per pound compared with 79.7
cents a year ago. Volume of fresh market sales increased to 256 million
pounds this year, up 11 percent from the 1978-79 season. Fresh sales
accounted for 54 percent of the U.S. production continuing the upward trend in
total fresh sales and fresh market sales as a percent of total sales. The
average price received by growers for mushrooms sold for fresh market averaged
95.9 cents per pound, an increase of 1.0 cent over the previous season.
Processor usage totaled 214 million pounds, 5 percent less than the prior
year. Grower prices received for mushrooms averaged 57.6 cents per pound, a
decline of 6.6 cents per pound from 1978-79.

Growers used nearly 151 million square feet (14.0 million square meters)
of bed and tray area to produce the 1979-80 crop, up 3 percent from the
previous season. Yields averaged 3.12 pounds per square foot, 1 percent more
than the 1978-79 yield.

An estimated 148 million square feet (13.8 million square meters) of
production area is intended for the 1980-81 season, a 2 percent decrease from
last season. If growers' current plans are carried out, first filling will be
down 3 percent; second filling, down 2 percent; and additional fillings,
nearly the same as the 1979-80 season.
