1981-82 MUSHROOM PRODUCTION AND VALUE UP

Mushroom production in the United States reached 517 million pounds (235
thousand metric tons) during the 1981-82 marketing season. This is 10 percent
greater than both the 1980-81 and 1979-80 crop and continues the upward trend
in production since mushroom estimates were started in 1966. This year's
survey includes growers with production in 25 States. Pennsylvania, the
leading State, with 53 percent of the U.S. 1981-82 crop, grew 273 million
pounds, up 15 percent from the previous season. Eastern States accounted for
64 percent of the total U.S. production; Central States, 12 percent; and
Western States, 24 percent.

The value of the 1981-82 crop was $419 million, up 12 percent from the
1980-81 season. Growers received an average of 81.0 cents per pound compared
with 79.8 cents the previous season. Volume of fresh market sales increased
to 319 million pounds during the 1981-82 marketing year, 16 percent above
1980-81. The upward trend in the proportion sold fresh continued with fresh
sales accounting for 62 percent of the U.S. production compared with 59 percent
in 1980-81. The average price received by growers for mushrooms sold for fresh
market averaged 96.8 cents per pound, an increase of 2.1 cents from the
previous season. Processor usage totaled 198 million pounds, 2 percent more
than the prior season. Grower prices received for processing mushrooms
averaged 55.7 cents per pound, an decrease of 2.9 cents per pound from 1980-81.

Growers used approximately 141 million square feet (13.1 million square
meters) of bed and tray area to produce the 1981-82 crop, up 1 percent from the
previous season. Yields averaged 3.66 pounds per square foot, 9 percent more
than 1980-81.

As estimated 141 million square feet (13.1 million square meters) of
production area is intended for use during the 1982-83 season, virtually the
same area as used during the 1981-82 season. If growers' current plans are
carried out, the first filling will be down 1 percent; second filling, down 5
percent; and additional fillings, up 3 percent from the 1981-82 season.

*************************************************************************
A thorough review of data reported for the last two crop years was *
completed in response to a request from the mushroom industry. The *
review disclosed that erroneous data had been included in the report *
for the 1980-81 and 1981-82 crop years. *
