1983-84 MUSHROOM PRODUCTION AND VALUE UP

Mushroom production in the United States reached a new record high 543
million pounds (246 thousand metric tons) during the 1983-84 marketing
season. This is 11 percent higher than 1982-83, and 5 percent above the
1981-82 crop. This year's survey includes growers with production in 25
States. Pennsylvania, the leading State, with nearly 52 percent of the U.S.
1983-84 crop, grew 280 million pounds, up 13 percent from the previous
season. Eastern States accounted for 63 percent of the total U.S. production;
Central States, 12 percent; and Western States, 25 percent.

The value of the 1983-84 crop was a record high $471 million, up 9 percent
from the 1982-83 season. Growers received an average of 86.9 cents per pound
compared with 87.9 cents the previous season. Volume of fresh market sales
increased to 373 million pounds during the 1983-84 marketing year, up 11
percent from 1982-83. Fresh sales accounted for 69 percent of the U.S.
production, the same as in 1982-83. The average price received by growers for
mushrooms sold for fresh market averaged 97.0 cents per pound, a decrease of
3.0 cents from the previous season. Processor usage totaled 170 million
pounds, 11 percent higher than the prior season. Grower prices received for
processing mushrooms averaged 64.6 cents per pound, an increase of 3.8 cents
per pound from 1982-83.

Growers used approximately 138 million square feet (12.9 million square
meters) of bed and tray area to produce the 1983-84 crop, 2 percent more than
the previous season. Yields averaged 3.93 pounds per square foot compared
with 3.63 pounds per square foot in 1982-83.

An estimated 146 million square feet (13.5 million square meters) of
production area is intended for use during the 1984-85 season, up 5 percent
from'the area used during the 1983-84 season. If growers' current plans are
carried out, the first filling will be up 3 percent; second filling, up 4
percent; and additional fillings, up 7 percent from the 1983-84 season.
