1984-85 MUSHROOM PRODUCTION AND VALUE UP ''-

Mushroom production in the United States reached a new record high 596
million pounds (270 thousand metric tons) during the 1984-85 marketing
season. This is 6 percent higher than 1983-84, and 21 percent above the
1982-83 crop. This year's survey includes growers with production in 24
States. Pennsylvania, the leading State, with about 46 percent of the U.S.
1984-85 crop, grew 275 million pounds, down 2 percent from the previous
season. Eastern States accounted for 60 percent of the total U.S. production;
Central States, 11 percent; and Western States, 29 percent.

The value of the 1984-85 crop was a record high $494 million, up 1 percent
from the 1983-84 season. Growers received an average of 82.9 cents per pound
compared with 86.6 cents the previous season. Volume of fresh market sales
increased to 420 million pounds during the 1984-85 marketing year, up 8
percent from 1983-84. Fresh sales accounted for 70 percent of the U.S.
production, compared with 69 percent in the prior season. The average price
received by growers for mushrooms sold for fresh market averaged 93.5 cents
per pound, a decrease of 3.0 cents from the previous season. Processor usage
totaled 176 million pounds, 1 percent higher than the prior season. Grower
prices received for processing mushrooms averaged 57.4 cents per pound, a
decrease of 7.2 cents per pound from 1983-84.

Growers used approximately 139 million square feet (12.9 million square
meters) of bed and tray area to produce the 1984-85 crop, 3 percent less than
the previous season. Yields averaged 4.28 pounds per square foot compared
with 3.93 pounds per square foot in 1983-84. The dollar volume per square
foot was $3.55 in 1984-85 compared with $3.41 per square foot in the prior
season.

An estimated 134 million square feet (12.5 million square meters) of
production area is intended for use during the 1985-86 season, down 4 percent
from the area used during the 1984-85 season. If growers' current plans are
carried .out, the first filling will be off 6 percent; second filling, off 5
percent; and additional fillings, off 2 percent from the 1984-85 season.
