Itispasseddownfromilliterateparenttochild,sometimesforasmanyasfivegenerations.Moreoverifweacceptpredictionsthatknowledgeisdoublingeveryfouryearsandthatnewtechnologieswillbringa increaseinboththenumbersofjobsrequiringlowskillsandthefewjobsthatrequirehighskilllevels,we'llbefindingincreasing"variability"injobdifficultyinthenearfuture.Thatmeansthatifpeopleenterthelowskilljobswithoutgoodbasicliteracy,theiropportunitiesforadvancementmaybeseverelylimited.Wemaywitnesstheformationoflargeoccupationalghettosofpeopleindeadendjobs.(Cont-dPaqe2)
