COLLEGE OFTHE BAHAMAS NASSAU, BAHAMAS-EST. 1974 VoluI;',e I,Number7AMONTHLYNEWSLETIERJune-July1988BAHAMASLIBRARYASSOCIATIONPROMOTES EXCELLENC: Ithasbeensaidthatweliveinaninformationsocietytoday.Librariescanbeavehiclefordisseminatinginformationtopeopleinallsectorsofthatsociety.TheopportunitiesandneedforimprovingandexpandinglibraryservicespresentachallengetoalltypesoflibrariesintheBahamas.TheBahamasLibraryAssociationisanationalorganizationdedicatedtotheimprovementandpromotionoflibrariesthroughoutthecountry.Itwasformedin1975astheBahamasSchoolLibraryAssociation.Thenamewaschangedin1979toreflectabroadermission,encompassingacademic,public,andspeciallibrariesaswellasthoseinelementaryandhighschools.Mrs.VanreaThomas-Rolle,COB'sChiefLibrarian,isthepresidentofB.L.A.Monthlymeetingsgivemembersfromavarieryoflibrariesanopportunitytokeepintouchwith anotherandworktogetheronassociationprojectssuchasNationalLibraryWeekandLibrarian'sWeek.Theassociation'sannualconference,heldinJune,providesworkshopsinwhichmemberscanimprovetheirskillsinthefieldsoflibraryandinformationscience.BLAencouragestheadoptionofstandardsbothforlibrariesandlibrarystaffmembersasameansofassuringmeasurablelevelsofqualityinfacilities,services,andstaffing.Thisisimportantbecausegoodqualitylibraryservicerequireswell-trainedpersonnelwhoareprovidedwithproperequipmentandagoodcollectionofmaterialshousedinadequatefacilities.Ifanyofthoseelementsismissingthequalityofserviceprovidedtolibrarypatronswillsuffer.AcountrycanonlybeasuccessfulmemberoftheWorldCommunityandmakeameaningfulcontributiontointernationalaffairstotheextentthatallits people haveaccesstotheideasandinformationtheyneedtointeractwitheachotherandtheirglobalneighbors.TheBahamasLibraryAssociationisstrivingtoprovidethatinformationtoallBahamians.
