The 1966 calf crop fo~-the--4 Uned-States-wa-43,473,000 head compared with
43,928,000 for 1965, according to the Crop Reporting Board. This is the first
decline in number of calves born from the previous year since 1958.

The decrease in the 1966 calf crop was the result of fewer cows and heifers
2 years old and older on farms January 1, 1966. There were 50,420,000 cows and
heifers 2 years old and over on farms January 1, 1966 compared with 51,219,000 a
year earlier.

The number of calves born in 1966 expressed as a percentage of cows and
heifers 2 years old and older on hand at the beginning of the year was 86 percent,
the same as a year earlier. This percentage is not strictly a calving rate be-
cause the January 1 inventory of cows and heifers 2 years old and older does not
include all heifers that calve during the year and include some cows that died
or were slaughtered before calving.

In the North Central States, 9 States had smaller calf crops than a year
earlier, one had the same number and 2 had more calves bbrn. Michigan--down
7 percent--had the greatest percentage decrease. Nebraska and South Dakota
each showed a 1-percent increase.

Of the 8 South Atlantic States, 7 had smaller calf crops and 1 was larger.
In the South Central region 4 States had smaller calf crops than a year earlier
and 4 States showed an increase over the previous year. Texas, the largest
cattle State in the Nation, had a 1-percent increase.

In the 11 Western States, 6 had smaller calf crops and 5 were larger than
in 1965. Colorado with 4 percent more calves than a year earlier had the greatest
percentage increase. Nevada was down the most with a 5-percent decrease.

The 1966 calf crop was smaller in all North Atlantic States with the decline
ranging from 3 to 10 percent below a year earlier.

The calf crop estimates for 1960 through 1965 have been revised in
conjunction with the 5-year revision program for all cattle and calves.
Revised estimates by States for the years 1960-64 are shown in
Statistical Bulletin 392,"Calf Crop, Lamb Crop, Wool and Mohair,"
U. S. Department of Agriculture, Statistical Reporting Service. This
