CALF CROP UP 2 PERCENT
The 1963 calf crop for the United States was 41,811,000 head--2 percent more
than the 1962 crop of 41,027,000 head and the fifth consecutive year of increase,
according to the Crop Reporting Board.

The larger calf crop in 1963, compared with the previous year, was the re-
sult of more cows and heifers on farms. There were 48,649,000 head of cows and
heifers 2 years old and older January 1, 1963, compared with 47,472,000 head on
the same date for 1962. By January 1, 1964, the number had increased to
49,852,000 head.
The number of calves born in 1963 expressed as a percentage of cows and heif-
ers 2 years old and older January 1, 1963 was 86 percent, the same as a year earlier.
This percentage is not strictly a calving rate because the January 1 inventory of
cows and heifers 2 years old and over does not include all heifers that calved
during the year and includes some cows that died or were slaughtered before calving.

NORTH CENTRAL STATES
In the North Central region, 8 States had larger calf crops in 1963 compared
with a year earlier. North Dakota increased 5 percent--the largest gain in this
region, and South Dakota and Kansas were up 4 percent. Missouri and Nebraska were
3 percent higher. However, Ohio was down 4 percent and Illinois 2 percent lower.

SOUTHERN STATES
States in the South Atlantic region showing increased calf crops compared with
1962 were: Florida, up 6 percent; South Carolina and Georgia, 3 percent higher;
and Virginia, up 1 percent. Delaware and West Virginia had decreases of 4 and 2
percent, respectively. The 1963 calf crop in the South Central region was larger
in all States than in 1962, except Louisiana which was unchanged. Kentucky in-
creased 5 percent, and Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas were each up 4 percent.

WESTERN STATES
In 1963, most States in this region had larger calf crops than a year earlier.
Montana and Wyoming had the greatest gains--each up 6 percent. Colorado was up 4
percent, while California showed no change.

NORTH ATLANTIC STATES
The calf crop in 1963 was smaller in all States in this region compared with
a year earlier. The two major States in this group--New York and Pennsylvania--
were down 3 and 2 percent, respectively.
