ENGINEERING ENROLLMENTS AND DEGREES,

1951

Robert C.

Story* and Henry H,

Armsbys*

In the fall
students enrolled
peering. At the s
121 institutions o
the previous year,
the graduate level

of 1951, there were 145,997 undergraduate engineering
in the 192 institutions offering the first degree in engi-
ame time there were 19,640 graduate students enrolled in
offering advanced degrees in engineering. As compared with
the number of undergraduates has declined 9,6 percent. At
, an increase of 5.2 percent was reported.

The decline in the total number of engineering students in 1951 from
1950 was not nearly as sharp as that which occurred in the total male enroll-
ment in all institutions of higher education. About 8 percent fewer engineer-
ing students were enrolled as compared to a 10.9 percent drop in total enroll-
ment. Possibly the principal reason for the smaller decline in the number of
engineering students was the fact that freshmen engineers increased 1.4o
percent in the face of a general decline of total male freshmen of 12.3 percent.
For the first time since 1946 the freshman class in engineering has resumed its
traditional position as the largest of the four classes

During the year ending June 30, 1951, the engineering schools conferred
41,893 bachelor's degrees in engineering, 5,156 master's and professional
degrees, and 586 doctorates, The number of bachelor's degrees conferred in
1951 was about 20 percent below the previous year. Master' s and professional
degrees increased 5.1 percent and doctorates 18.6 percent. Bachelor's degrees
in engineering constituted 10.9 percent of all first degrees conferred; master's
and professional, 709 percent; doctorates, 8.0 percent.

By class level, the distribution of undergraduate
of students enrolled in fifth year of 5-year curriculum,
part-time day and evening students, and special students
freshman, 31.8 percent; sophomores, 21.5 percent; juniors
eSnores, 24.7 percent.

Undergraduate students: Institutions were requested to report by class

degree. Part-time students" (both day and evening) may include degree
candidates as well as students who are not working toward a degree.

Graduate students: Institutions were requested to "Report all students
who have been admitted to formal graduate standing and are enrolled in graduate
courses regardless of the number of credit hours carried by the student, and
regardless of whether the student's work is administered by the engineering
college or the graduate school."
